2020 was a big year for health claims with Covid-19 impacting so many of us worldwide. As 2020 comes to an end we wanted to reflect on this year looking at recently released statistics from Southern Cross Health Insurance on the top health claims for 2020.
People of different ages can have very different requirements when it comes to claiming for healthcare services. This is clear when we look at the top Southern Cross claims for males and females. Southern Cross have gathered this data across 2019 and 2020. When you apply for health insurance, you should check that the policy covers you for what you are most likely to need. Here is a quick look at the top claims by total value, gender, and age.
Southern Cross have revealed that knee and hip replacement surgeries are the top two procedures for claims in the year ended June 30. According to the insurer, it paid out close to $1 billion in claims during the 12-month period. This figure included over 1,800 knee replacement surgeries ($47.9 million) and over 1,900 hip replacement surgeries ($45 million). These two procedures accounted for almost 10% of the total claims paid. For children 20 years old and below, surgical tooth removal was the most common claim this year, followed by tonsillectomy and endometriosis surgery.
According to Dr Stephen Child the chief medical officer of Southern Cross Health Insurance, this data shows how important private health insurance is in helping New Zealanders live healthy lives. He said “While the public health system does a fantastic job looking after acute urgent medical issues, health insurance gives Kiwis access to elective surgical procedures and specialist consultations when they need it and choice about where they receive it,”.
