The value of health insurance

The value of health insurance

December 13th, 2018

Now, more than ever, you need health insurance …

Over the last few months we have had a number of clients diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The treatment available from Wellington Hospital is very good, however they do offer a  limited range of solutions.

If you have health insurance, you will find that you may be able to get alternative treatments that are not state funded. As such you would either need to privately pay for them or use your health insurance cover.

If you have trauma or critical care insurance the funds from this may be able to be used for this purpose.

If you don’t have insurance for health and trauma it’s a good time to look at these options.

In the New Zealand health system, we have now seen cancer treatments move from being – only State funded – to being available in the private sector.  We may not agree with it and we may not like it, but it has happened.

As such, a few years ago not having Cancer Cover in your health insurance was not such a major issue.

Unfortunately, the proverbial cat is now out of the bag and private cancer treatment is becoming increasingly  common in New Zealand. A good example of this is the new Cancer Centre which  has now been opened at Bowen Hospital, Wellington – the Bowen Icon Cancer Centre.

Now more than ever you need private health cover and you want a policy with a maximum amount of cover as possible for cancer treatments.  Amounts up to $300,000 are available and I know I would want as much as I could get!

It used to be that heart issues were the area of concern and the costly area of private health but now it’s cancer treatments, and the newer the treatment the more likely it is to be:

  1. Not funded by the State
  2. Expensive
  3. Drugs still being tested by the professionals

And if you have cancer would you not want the best treatments available?

So, if you need to know which covers you should have to make sure you are protected, let us know and we’ll be happy to give you a complete review and analysis of what’s out there.

Do not wait until claim time to find out what you are covered for, or if you don’t hold cover because it’s too expensive you need to think again.  Varying the excess options can make these types of covers more affordable and is what we will look to explore with you in our discussions.

If you would like a no obligation review of the covers or a personal or business protection plan – Grant and Thurl will be happy to help.
