More than 600 kiwi men die from prostate cancer every year. The Prostate Cancer Foundation New Zealand are holding a fundraising event called Blue September to support those battling prostate cancer.  Every effort, every activity, every donation, helps to improve the health outcomes of Kiwi men.

One in eight men end up getting prostate cancer, having an early diagnosis and being able to get effective treatment can save lives. Early detection is key as some men will not have any symptoms when they are first diagnosed. This disease is particularly dangerous as men often won’t go to their doctor about it and therefore, they won’t know the symptoms and may not feel unwell at first.

What are the signs of prostate cancer and is it treatable?

According to the Ministry of Health  prostate problems are common as men get older, some common symptoms include:

-Peeing more often

-A poor urine flow when peeing

-Trouble starting or stopping pee

-Getting up often during the night to pee.

It is possible that such symptoms may be due to cancer and therefore it’s important to get them checked by your doctor.

Age and family history can impact your chances of prostate cancer, it is more common in older men as well as men who have a history of prostate cancer in the family.

Prostate cancer can be treated and finding it early and getting treatment can save your life, however not all prostate cancers need to be treated. It is a very personal decision to get your prostate checked but doing so can increase your changes of getting treatment early.
