October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and to show our support, Marketing Assistant Jess put on an office lunch to fundraise for this important cause. We had a great time going pink for a day in our office! Everyone brought yummy plates of food in to share to further discuss and raise awareness for the good cause.

About Breast Cancer

1 in 9 New Zealand women are affected by Breast Cancer in their lifetime, and today 8, New Zealand women will be diagnosed with cancer. It seems now that every person you talk to has a story of someone, they know who is affected by cancer.

The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation works to:

  • Promote awareness and education of what breast cancer is and how to detect it
  • Provide support for those going through treatment; and
  • Fund research into detection and treatment.

Cancer is most treatable when it’s found early. From age 20, it’s important to know the look and feel of your breasts and show any changes to your doctor. From age 40, mammograms are recommended. Support for those who need it can be found here.

Cancer cases going undetected because of Covid-19

At least 133 women across New Zealand have no idea they have cancer right now, so it is important to raise awareness. Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation NZ is gravely concerned for these women, who have missed the mammogram that would have diagnosed them during the latest Covid-19 lockdowns. The number of undetected cancer cases is expected to grow as both Breast Screen Aotearoa, and private clinics deal with the fallout of extended lockdowns. The petition going at the moment is to get the Government to make Breast Screening a requirement under level 4 – to sign the petition, click here.

We are raising money and have set up a fundraising page to go directly to Breast Cancer Foundation NZ.  If you would like to donate and help us reach our goal, please click here. We appreciate any support. If you wish to find out how you can protect yourself from any unwanted cancer diagnosis, our advisers can help talk you through what cancer covers are available – if you would like any help with your insurances, please get in touch with us.
